Announcing the Sam and Aline Skaggs Performing Arts Center, Juan Diego Catholic High School
Eckman Construction announces the groundbreaking for construction on the new Sam and Aline Skaggs Performing Arts Center at Juan Diego Catholic High School in Draper, Utah. This state-of-the-art facility, designed by MHTN Architects, will serve as a beacon for K-12 performing arts education in the region. The project will break ground in July 2024, with an anticipated completion date in time for the Fall 2025 school year.
The new building, owned by the Catholic Diocese of Salt Lake City, represents a significant investment in the future of education, with a construction budget of $10 million. The addition provides space for a flexible black-box performance space and lobby to celebrate the student and community experience. The building also adds eight new general-purpose classrooms with a flexible collaboration space and access to a secure, contemplative courtyard. Scott Later, Principal, MHTN Architects said, “This project offers a fantastic opportunity to bring the south entry up to the same architectural level as the rest of campus. The new flexible learning and art spaces will be an asset for the students and the community.”
Key features of the Sam and Aline Skaggs Performing Arts Center include:
- A striking south entrance that opens into a beautifully designed courtyard, featuring concrete arches, columns, canopy, an architectural seat wall, and attractive new landscaping.
- A flexible auditorium with a seating capacity of over 500, providing an ideal venue for school performances, assemblies, and community events.
- Dedicated classrooms and studios tailored for various performing arts disciplines, ensuring students have access to top-notch facilities for their education and practice.
- Common areas designed for events, fostering a sense of community and collaboration among students, faculty, and visitors.
As the general contractor, Eckman Construction will oversee all aspects of the project, from concrete and steel framing to glazing, masonry, and high-end finishes. Cooper Eckman, President of Eckman Construction, and an alumnus of Juan Diego Catholic High School, expressed his enthusiasm for the project: “It’s an honor to build such a beautiful and meaningful addition to the Juan Diego Catholic High School campus. As a former student, I am particularly invested in ensuring this project is completed to the highest standards.”
