Job Purpose

Provide accurate quantity surveys, maintains relationships with subcontractor community and work in a team

Job Summary

Complete conceptual cost plans, creates sub lists, spreadsheets for bid jobs, distribution of plans, specifications, and fielding of questions for subcontractors regarding projects out for bid. Clarify discrepancy areas with the architect, perform material take-offs for comparison to subcontractors’ bids and/or for work Eckman Construction may perform, compare, and analyze bids, attend pre-bid job walks, complete site survey forms, maintain digital plans, update the database, and cost history, attend and participate in job presentations as may be required.

Primary Responsibilities

Hard Bid Assignments:

  • Study drawings and specifications to become knowledgeable of all special terms and conditions of the project.
  • Develop subcontractor bid lists based on scope of work and sub’s limitations/capabilities.
  • Maintain telephone contact to be alert for status of the sub’s bid.
  • Start preparation of exclusions and qualifications list.
  • Prepare material take-offs as required.
  • Attend all pre-bid job walks or meetings.
  • Assist on bid day in setting-up the bid tab, evaluate bids and hand carry bid to client, as may be required.
  • Visit site and complete a general survey and evaluation.
  • Thoroughly review specifications, write down any unusual items so they will not be forgotten.
  • After Quantity Summary sheets (bid tabs) are prepared, review estimating checklist for inclusion of all items.
  • Coordinate with Executives in the preparation of working estimates.
  • Prepare & distribute Company memo stating bid date, addendums, etc.

Conceptual Bid Assignments:

  • Maintain telephone contact to be alert to status of the sub’s budget.
  • Prepare material take-offs for Executives.
  • Attend all preconstruction meetings.
  • Visit site and complete a general survey and evaluation.
  • Thoroughly review criteria specifications, write down any unusual items so they will not be forgotten.
  • After Quantity Summary sheets (bid tabs) are prepared, review estimating checklist for inclusion of all items.
  • Computer Input of data.
  • Oversee monthly input of database and cost history.
  • Prepare and update cost plans.
  • Prepare Spreadsheets and material take-offs.
  • Oversee input of estimate database.

Education and Experience Requirements

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to: Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Architecture, Construction Management, or a related field and three (3) years of increasingly responsible experience as an Estimator.

Technical and Managerial Requirements

  • Software depends on assigned job responsibilities. Develop a proficiency in the following software, as appropriate:
    1. ProCore.
    2. OST (On Screen Take-Off)
    3. Bluebeam.
    4. Internet Access.
    5. Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Managerial skills are required.
  • Eckman Construction’s Policy Manuals:
    1. Employee Handbook.
    2. Field Safety Handbook (Required for all field support personnel.  Adhere to applicable safety requirements).

Physical Requirements

The following are usual and customary for this position:

  • Walking:  Able to walk across rugged and uneven terrain consisting of various materials including dirt, sand, gravel, and rock.
  • Climbing Stairs:  Able to climb up and down rough and finished stairs of multiple- floor buildings.
  • Climbing Ladders:  Able to climb up and down ladders of various heights.
  • Lifting and Carrying:  Able to bend knees and use hands and fingers to lift and carry objects such as engineering drawings and specifications weighing up to approximately 25 lbs.
  • Communications:  Hearing and speaking to exchange information in person or on the telephone.
  • Vision:  Seeing to read engineering and architectural documents, operation and safety instructions, and a computer monitor.
  • Sitting:   Sitting and operating a keyboard for extended periods of time to enter data into a computer workstation.
  • Dexterity:   Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard.
